How to Install Sod

Your lawn is the heart and soul of your landscaped backyard. A lush carpet of grass will make your home look beautiful.

Step 1: If you are replacing an existing lawn, determine why the old lawn isn't doing well. If the problem isn't fixed then the new lawn will die just as the old one did.

Step 2: Measure the area you want sodded. If you have never done this before, You typically want to order about 10% extra.

Step 3: Use a rototiller to dig about 6-8 inches into the lawn. As you are doing this it is important to remove any sticks, rocks, or other debris you unearth in the landscape.

Step 4: To give your lawn a fighting cha

nce add about 2 inches of good compost and rototill that into the soil.

Step 5: Rake the area smooth and pitch it the direction you want water to flow. Never towards a building.

Step 6: Unroll turf. You should start against a straight edge such as a driveway, walkway, or patio then work your way over. The

edges of the sod should touch and there should be no gaps. gently tug on the sod as you lay it so it stretches out and lays flat. Once it is down you should not walk on it.

Step 7: Fertilize and water. Use a good starter fertilizer and water your lawn thoroughly. After this water the lawn twice a day. If you let your lawn dry out the sod will shrink and die.

Step 8: After 10 days, it is okay to mow your grass. it is important to use a push mower and not a heavy riding mower. Bag the clippings as you go.
