What is Snow Mold and Why is it on my Grass?

Writer: JesseJesse

Snow mold is a white fungus that grows on the grass. It is partially due to excess moisture on the grass. It is not usually noticed until the snow melts in the spring. Aside from it being unsightly, it will likely damage the turf and need to be re-seeded in spots.

The best way to prevent snow mold is by doing a thorough fall cleanup and mowing the lawn short before the first snowfall. This allows leaves and debris to blow across your yard instead of becoming imbedded between the grass blades. It also allows your lawn to shed excess moisture more quickly.

Bonus tip: When clearing snow off your driveway and sidewalk, try not to pile it all up in one location. The longer it takes the snow to melt, the more likely your lawn is to develop snow mold.
